Samples finds a good vibe on UT visit
For many of the state's top football prospects, the month of June signals the kind of barnstorming tour of college summer camps that truly signals the beginning of their recruitments in earnest.
Dallas (Texas) Skyline wide receiver Ra'Shaad Samples is one of those getting ready to see what the recruiting world has to offer, as he made his first camp visit of the month on Sunday to Texas. Although the 5-11, 165-pound Samples didn't work out at the camp, the experience was one he won't forget after shadowing new Texas assistant coach Darrell Wyatt for much of the day.
"The visit went very good," Samples said. I had a lot of fun. I didn't work out, but Coach Wyatt said he didn't mind because he watched me all spring."
According to Samples, Texas head coach Mack Brown didn't need to see him work out to know that he wanted to an up-close moment with the player who currently ranks No. 20 on the current LSR Top 100 for 2013.
"I talked a lot with Mack and I spent the whole time getting tips and coaching from coach Wyatt. He helped me gain insight on just playing the wide receiver position. Overall, I felt like they showed a lot of love and I left with a good vibe."
Next up on the summer camp circuit for Samples is Kansas State next weekend, followed by possible stops at Kansas, TCU, Baylor and California.
The question everyone is asking is whether Samples has a leader this early in the recruiting process.
"I'm not sure if I can say favorite, but I can say that I liked Texas a lot today! And I want to get a chance to check out Cal and see how the others camps go, so we'll see. I'll be able to tell you better at the end of the summer."
As a sophomore in 2010, Samples caught 27 passes for 485 yards (18.0 average) and six touchdowns.
