Spartans looking closely at Wisconsin standout
One of the top prospects in Wisconsin for the class of 2013 is Austin Ramesh of Northland Pines High School. SpartanMag.com has details on the recruitment of this 6-foot-2, 222-pound prospect.
Led by primary recruiter Brad Salem, the Michigan State Spartans are actively recruiting several top prospects from Wisconsin. One of the players they are looking forward to having on campus in the near future is austing Ramesh. SpartanMag.com spoke with the father of Ramesh and got some details on his son's recruitment.
"His recruitment is going well," Mr. Ramesh indicated. "He plays hockey and that has not allowed him to visit as many schools as he would like this winter, but we will be visinting several of them this spring. We will be going down to Iowa and Iowa State in the next few weeks as they are both showing him a lot of interest. He already has offers from Illinois State and the University of North Dakota."
Has Coach Salem and Michigan State University been in contact?
"Yes they have," he stated. "We were supposed to go there this weekend, but his hockey team won their playoff game so they have another one this Saturday. We hope to get there another time after hockey finishes up. Coach Salem has been our contact person from Michigan State, he has been very positive about things."
Ramesh is listed as an inside linebacker recruit by the rivals.com database, but many schools view him as an athlete recruit that could play on either side of the ball. While some schools see him as a linebacker, he will also get a look at running back or fullback as well. Last fall Ramesh rushed for 2263-yards on 222 carries and scored 19 touchdowns in just 10 games. His 10-yards per carry average was one of the best in the state.
As with any Wisconsin prospect, the Badgers are actively involved and Ramesh attended their junior day last weekend. Mr. Ramesh talked about the feedback they got from Head Coach Brett Bielema.
"We went into Coach Bielema's office and he told us that they only have around 10 scholarships to offer for the class of 2013. He said that in any other year Austin would have an offer, but this year the numbers are just very limited. He said they may have some additional spots open up, and if that happens, Austin has a great chance of getting a scholarship."
Michigan State is also tight on scholarship this year, but they definitely want to address the outside linebacker position as well as running back. You can be sure that Coach Salem will invite Ramesh to a session of the Spartan 1-Day Elite Player Camp.
SpartanMag.com will be sure to keep in contact with Ramesh in the coming weeks. Once hockey season is over we look for him to visit several schools, including Michigan State. It is likley he will make a visit once spring practice begins so he can see the players and coaches in action. Once he starts making campus visits, do not be surprised if his offer list begins to grow significantly.
