Baylor visits Chevis
Houston Sharpstown linebacker Reggie Chevis said late Wednesday he doesn't have a leader in the race for his recruiting commitment.
The latest schools to be added to his list are Arizona and Arizona State. Baylor made its presence felt when defensive coordinator Phil Bennett was at Sharpstown's practice on Tuesday. The Bears are among 21 programs which have offered.
"As of now, I have no favorite,'' Chevis said. "But I could make a decision today or tomorrow. The school I'm interested in has to be right for me. I'm looking at everything.''
Sir-Michael Triggs, Sharpstown linebacker coach, said recently that Chevis could be making his commitment announcement on May 25, the day of the program's spring game. If that timeline holds, that would be a tough spot for the Bears. Chevis said Baylor would like him to come take a visit to the campus before he decides. He hasn't ruled it out but it's clear time is of the essence.
It's likely that Baylor wants to fill one more linebacker spot. At 6-2, 245, the Bears - just like everybody else - see him as a middle linebacker. There's no question that Baylor's defense has to make strides in the coming years because of the contain issues it's suffered from in the previous two seasons.
The Bears' recruited linebacker corps is really shaping up to be one of the best to come to Waco. That includes West Orange-Stark's Travon Blanchard, Mesquite Horn's D.J. Green and Rockwall-Heath's Raaquan Davis who just committed on Monday.
The size and aggressiveness with which he plays blows up on the film. Chevis recorded 12 sacks among his 102 tackles.
"I'm impressed with Baylor,'' Chevis said. "They've really com one. I feel like I'm in a good spot. I just have to do something that works for me and where I'll be happy.''
