Garner willing to wait
Tavares Garner during Monday's Tiger Camp but he's definitely interested in waiting.LSU stopped short of a committable offer to Manvel (Texas) cornerback
"Right now it's an unofficial offer," Garner told TigerBait.com. "But they told me I have a guaranteed offer coming soon. They told me they want to see me again but not in action. They want to see me again and talk about it with my parents. They love what they've seen but they only have one more spot for a DB. They like me and a kid named Will Likely (Belle Glade, Fla.). They said right now I have it wrapped up in a bag. They said I looked real good today. I broke on the ball real well and I've got nice ball skills and fundamentals. They said I'm going to be the kid that gets that offer."
Asked for LSU's timetable to fortify the offer, Garner said, "They told me by the end of the summer. I'm OK with that."
Meanwhile Garner, a four-star recruit ranked No. 25 at his position in the Class of 2013, seems to be wavering on his February commitment to Texas Tech.
"I'm still a Texas Tech commitment but I'm looking forward to de-committing soon," he said.
Garner's Manvel teammate Kyrion Parker, a three-star wide receiver, committed to LSU on Monday. They attended the camp together and Garner said they've discussed attending the same college.
"We want to go to school together and play with each other," Garner said. "It's a great opportunity to play with Kyrion. He makes me better and I make him better. Kyrion is a great receiver and he fits the LSU offense."
During Monday's camp, Garner (6-0, 170) worked with secondary coach Corey Raymond, and it was Raymond who told Garner about the potential LSU offer. Overall, Garner said he clicked with the LSU staff.
"Oh man, the coaches are down to earth," he said. "They're laid back and great. Everything was organized correctly and everything. It was a real good trip."
Garner made 48 tackles with 26 solos, three interceptions, 19 breakups and two fumble recoveries as a junior. He transferred to Manvel last offseason from Houston (Texas) Austin High School where he predominantly played running back.
Garner, who has nearly 20 offers, said he's headed next to the Texas camp on Sunday.
"That's who's been interested in me," he said. "LSU and Texas. After that I'll be done (with camps) and it will be straight 7-on-7s."
Asked to name his schools of high interest, he said, "LSU, Texas, UCLA, Oklahoma, Baylor and Texas A&M."
