May 19, 2013Ed. Note: Below is the Peristyle post from PolyDad2 AKA Steve Martinez after his son John's graduation Friday if you didn't catch it. He notes that with his other college football-playing son, Cal senior defensive tackle Keni Kaufusi graduating after this fall semester, the Martinez Family will have their baccalaureate moments spread out for maximum enjoyment this year.
3 things . . .
1) Thank you all it really has been a fun weekend . . . "capping" an interesting four years.
2) (to poster FTB who kiddingly wondered if "John is an example of everything that is wrong with this team. Shouldn't he be focusing more on football?": Ha ha, they had a lift at 6:00 A.M. the day of the athletic graduation.
3) John is not the nervous type before a game, doesn't have to throw up, always just dials in and focuses.
As he was walking up to get his diploma Friday morning, he said he felt his heart racing and even felt a little sick. The lady at the stage asked him if he needed medical help as she thought he looked like he was hyperventilating and was going to pass out.
Yep, you could say this one meant a lot to him. 100,000 people screaming at him to fail is nothing, getting a six ounce leather folder though . . . that thing weighed a ton.
Steve Martinez of Salt Lake City and his wife, Lori, are parents of two college football players -- John Martinez, an offensive guard going into his third season as a starter this fall at USC and possessor of a degree in sociology, and a second college football playing son, Cal's Kaufusi, mentioned above, who will also earn his degree in sociology.
