In a recent interview with GoAZCat.com, Thomas Welsh named USC, Cal, and Stanford as three schools that the 7-footer from LA's Loyola High likes. But he wouldn't go as far to name them leaders. The Trojans have already offered him a scholarship and are keeping in touch.
"I've been in contact with USC," Welsh said. "They've been talking to me about the typical recruiting stuff and telling me that it's a really exciting program and a great place to play."
Although USC's coaching staff is almost all brand new, the local prospect is familiar with their credentials.
"I've been talking to Coach Horton and Coach Enfield mostly. I know that both used to be head coaches and that Coach Enfield was really successful at Florida Gulf Coast."
That success in Florida even made an impact on prospects across the country in LA.
"I watched them and I thought they had an exciting style of play," Welsh said. "Coach Enfield and that team did very well."
The big center is interested in the way Enfield's teams run the floor.
"I'm interested in that style of play. I think it would be fun to run a little bit, get up and down, and make dunks. That's what his players do and it would be exciting to get to do that."
What he's really looking for, however, is a school that offers a quality program, athletically and academically.
"I'm just looking for the best combination of academics and athletics. I think USC has a very impressive combination of both."
USC isn't alone here. A few other elite academic institutions will be in the hunt during the July evaluation period.
"Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech, and many other schools have said they would be paying attention," Welsh said. "It's too many to name, to be honest."
That's why Welsh will wait until after July to narrow things down a bit. He doesn't plan to choose a school until his senior season.
