Senior tailback Hershel Dennis is expected to miss the 2006 season after it was revealed Thursday that he torn ligaments in his left knee.

The injury is another setback for the veteran runner who was attempting a comeback from another knee injury and establish himself as a starter. He tore his knee during Tuesday's wet and rainy practice. It was his first practice since injuring his hamstring before the start of spring practice.

Coach Pete Carroll said after practice that the school will consider applying for a sixth season of eligibility for the oft-injured senior.

The injury is yet another bump in the road for Dennis, having been implicated and later cleared in a rape allegation in 2004. Dennis returned to the team but was rarely seen on the field and later tore ligaments in his knee in practices before the 2005 Orange Bowl.

That injury would sideline him the entire 2005 season as USC went 12-1 and put together one of the better rush offenses in school history.
