May 28, 2008The USC basketball program gets a chance to move forward this weekend without even trying.
No Trojan coaches or players will be working inside the Galen Center this weekend, but with plenty of the nation's top prep basketball players in town for the Pangos All-American Camp, the Trojan program will certainly have plenty of exposure.
The country's top prep players like five-star USC-bound guard DeMar DeRozan, Brandon Jennings and Jrue Holiday all participated in the camp last summer, which the Galen Center hosted. Five-star forward Derrick Favors, attended the camp last season as a junior on his way towards the top of the 2009 class.
Former NBA assistant coach Dave Miller returns as the leading instructor for the three-day camp. At the conclusion of the three-day camp, the best of the best players will compete in a "Cream of the Crop" Top 40 and Top 20 game.
The camp director, Dino Trigonis, also coaches the Belmont Shore Basketball Club - an AAU team that DeRozan's played for.
With the camp coming early in the summer AAU schedule, the Pangos All-American Camp, the Galen Center could serves as a jumping off point for some fast-rising prep balller.
The camp helped push former high schoolers Robert Swift, Dorrell Wright and C.J. Miles direct to the NBA. The camp also helps some of the nation's "sleepers" assert themselves on the national recruiting scene.
