Maryland D-end has Purdue's attention

After school ends on Wednesday, Maryland defensive end Marvin Gross is looking forward to seeing as many colleges as possible.

He'll soon travel with his 7-on-7 team, hitting the road for a college tour that will take him to several areas in the east. He's got offers from there, like Connecticut, Rutgers, Wake Forest and West Virginia, but from elsewhere as well; Purdue, Colorado, Washington and even Hawaii have offered scholarships. The 6-foot-4, 220-pounder has 12 offers in all.

"I want to experience everything I can right now before I make my decision," the Dunbar High School senior-to-be said, "so if I can take an unofficial visit to a college or try to get an extra offer at a 7-on-7 camp, that's something I look forward to."

Purdue is looking to replenish its defensive end stock in the Class of 2013, making Gross and his position-mates important to the Boilermakers. And Purdue might get a visit. Gross says he'd like to get to West Lafayette this summer.

"I couldn't (go place before) because school was going on," he said. "But I plan on getting places toward the end of the summer as everything is calmed down and right before summer practices start.

"I know Purdue is really prestigious, and they're a school I'm interested in."

Gross says he plans to take all his official visits during the fall, but will need to try to determine which five schools those will be.

"I'll sit down with my family," he said, "and try to figure out the best schools that fit my athleticism and academic career, and we'll pursue it that way.

"I'm looking for a school where when I get there I know this is where I'm going to be for the next four years. I like it and want to play for this team and everything is as I pictured it."

Gross says he is a high-energy end.

"I pursue the ball, no matter if it's away from me or on my side," he said. "I rush the passer, that's what I do, get to the quarterback."
