Harris celebrates state title
Kirkwood High School has been playing football for 114 years, but the 2012 team with future Hawkeye Andre Harris was the first in school history to win a state championship. The undefeated Pioneers secured their spot in the record books with a 31-7 win over Fort Osage at the Edwards Jones Dome in St. Louis on Friday. We caught up with Harris, who had 3 catches for 51 yards in the game, to talk about the season, his future at Iowa, and much more.
Q: What was the whole experience like winning a state title this weekend?
HARRIS: It was crazy. It's the first time in 114 years that our school has won state, so it's a really big deal to everybody. We're just happy to be the ones to finally do it.
Q: What does it feel like to be that one team out of 114?
HARRIS: I mean words can't even describe it. It took a lot of hard work and preparation, but we finally got it done. It was a fun experience.
Q: What made the biggest difference in the state title game Friday?
HARRIS: Our defense really stepped up big and our offense came through too. The team we played had five or six shutouts this season and we put up 17 points right away in the first half. Then our defense held them to like 30 rushing yards and only a little over 100 total yards the whole game.
Q: How about you individually? How did you think you played this year as a senior?
HARRIS: I think I did what I wanted to do, just helped my team out and contributed any way I could. I just tried to do what they needed me to do and I think I got that done.
Q: Looking at recruiting, what have things been like with Iowa since you committed there?
HARRIS: Everything has been good. I actually just got off the phone with my recruiting coach, Coach Johnson. They're just showing me love and keep calling, keep staying in touch. It's been good.
Q: What have the coaches been telling you?
HARRIS: They're just getting to know me better. Coach Johnson has called after about every game and just told me congratulations and said they've been watching me and I've been playing well.
