Mitchell makes official visit

Derrick Mitchell Jr. used his official visit to Iowa this weekend not only to learn more about his future surroundings, but also to volunteer to play special teams as a true freshman. We caught up with the 6-foot, 185-pound Mitchell to talk about the trip, his future with the Hawkeyes, and much more.

Q: What all did you get to do on your official visit?

MITCHELL: I went out with my host, Reese, from Chicago. He's a similar guy to me. I met with Coach Ferentz, met with Coach Davis, took a tour of the facilities, and had a lot to eat. That's about it.

Q: Are the coaches still looking for you to come in at wide receiver?

MITCHELL: Yeah, they are, and I asked Coach Ferentz if there would be a chance I could return kicks. He said they have one returner coming back, but the other spot is open and the punt return spot is open too, so he said we'll see when I get there.

As a senior, the versatile Mitchell finished with 468 yards passing, 712 yards rushing, and 378 yards receiving, scoring 21 touchdowns in all. He also had 50 tackles on defense. In June, Mitchell committed to Iowa over scholarship offers from Nebraska, Cincinnati, Indiana, Iowa State, Kansas, and Kansas State, among others.
