Surprise teams highlight team recruiting rankings

MORE: Team rankings top 50 | State rankings | Position

Once again as Rivals.com releases its first team rankings of the recruiting year, Texas is on top as Mack Brown and his staff got off to their usual quick start. But can Texas hold onto the top spot for the first time since Vince Young was a high school senior? That remains to be seen.

Michigan, Florida State, Florida and Miami round out the top five as we head into the football season.

Team Rankings Top 10 Breakdown
1. Texas
Total commits: 18
Stock:
Buzz: With 12 four-star commitments and one five-star commitment, once again it should come as no surprise that Texas is in the top spot in the initial team rankings. But as always, it will be interesting to see if the Longhorns can hold everyone else off until National Signing Day in February.
Biggest gets: RB Johnathan Gray, WR Cayleb Jones, DT Malcom Brown
Top remaining targets: WR Dorial Green-Beckham, ATH Nelson Agholor, OL Andrus Peat
2. Michigan
Total commits: 20
Stock:
Buzz: While it is not unusual to see Michigan doing well in recruiting, it has come as a surprise how well they are doing this year with a new coaching staff and after a couple of below-average seasons on the field. Coach Brady Hoke and his staff have taken a very aggressive early approach and it is definitely paying off to this point.
Biggest gets: OL Kyle Kalis, OL Erik Magnuson, LB Royce Jenkins-Stone
Top remaining targets: OL Andrus Peat, ATH Devin Fuller, CB Yuri Wright
3. Florida State
Total commits: 14
Stock:
Buzz: After finishing with the No. 2 overall class last year, the Seminoles definitely seem poised to contend for the top spot again. Two five-star commitments headline the class so far and they are in the mix for some of the top talent along the East Coast and expect to close strong.
Biggest gets: DE Mario Edwards, Dante Fowler Jr., LB Ukeme Eligwe
Top remaining targets: DT Eddie Goldman, WR Stefon Diggs, ATH Nelson Agholor
4. Florida
Total commits: 15
Stock:
Buzz: The coaching transition in Gainesville has not slowed down the Florida recruiting machine. The Gators already have 10 four-star commitments, and with several open spots still available, the opportunity is still there for a push to the top.
Biggest gets: OL Jessamen Dunker, DB Brian Poole, RB Mike Davis
Top remaining targets: OL D.J. Humphries, DT Eddie Goldman, DE Darius Hamilton
5. Miami
Total commits: 22
Stock:
Buzz: Similar to Coach Hoke at Michigan, new head coach Al Golden has also taken a very aggressive early approach, which has resulted in favorable early returns. Golden has done very well in Dade and Broward Counties, and needs to continue to do well in those areas and beyond.
Biggest gets: WR Angelo Jean-Louis, DE Jelani Hamilton, DB Amos Leggett
Top remaining targets: DT Eddie Goldman, CB Tracy Howard, OL Avery Young
6. LSU
Total commits: 18
Stock:
Buzz: This class is quickly filling up for the Tigers, and seven four-stars are already committed. And as usual, in-state recruiting success is the norm for the Tigers, as they already have commitments from 10 of the top 15 players in Louisiana.
Biggest gets: WR Avery Johnson, DE Torshiro Davis, ATH Davante Bourque
Top remaining targets: DT Eddie Goldman, DB Landon Collins, DE Jordan Jenkins
7. Auburn
Total commits: 12
Stock:
Buzz: While the Tigers may only have 12 commitments to this point, nine of them are four-star recruits. The coaching staff has done exceptionally well in Georgia so far, where all three of their commitments are four-star players.
Biggest gets: QB Zeke Pike, RB T.J. Yeldon, TE Ricky Parks
Top remaining targets: OL D.J. Humphries, DT Eddie Goldman, ATH Nelson Agholor
8. Texas A&M
Total commits: 20
Stock:
Buzz: Following the mold of Texas, the Aggies have jumped out to a quick start with 20 early commitments, and only have a few available slots left. Not surprisingly, the Aggies have concentrated their efforts in the Lone Star State, and will likely keep with that pattern with the rest of this class.
Biggest gets: RB Trey Williams, QB Matt Davis, WR Bralon Addison
Top remaining targets: DT Aziz Shittu, DB Landon Collins, LB Brian Nance
9. Oklahoma
Total commits: 12
Stock:
Buzz: Seven of the 12 commitments are four-stars at this point, so the Sooners are off to another good start. Included in these four-stars are commitments from two of the top three players from Oklahoma, which is always important for the Sooners.
Biggest gets: OL John Michael McGee, WR Durron Neal, OL Ty Darlington
Top remaining targets: WR Dorial Green-Beckham, DT Eddie Goldman, QB Gunner Kiel
10. USC
Total commits: 9
Stock:
Buzz: While they continue to deal with some recruiting restrictions due to the NCAA violations, USC is still a major player from coast-to-coast. And with four of the top five players in California still uncommitted to this point, the Trojans still have a great opportunity to make a big move in the rankings.
Biggest gets: DE Arik Armstead, LB Jabari Ruffin, OL Max Tuerk
Top remaining targets: DT Ellis McCarthy, ATH Nelson Agholor, DB Shaq Thompson
