Lincoln breaks into Jeffferson's house; Takes W

BROOKLYN, NY - People that know about Abraham Lincoln basketball are familiar with the last name Telfair.

They know one that graduated from Lincoln and went straight to the league. Now they know about his younger brother Ethan Telfair, who currently plays point guard for Lincoln. Telfair scored 18 points and dished out 8 dimes to help Lincoln go on the road and knock off Jefferson 75-71.

Telfair scored the first two and last two points of the first half for the Railsplitters. However, Jefferson was the team that was on top. The Orange Wave came out and played a great first quarter, knocking down a couple of three pointers and controlling the boards on their way to a 19-12 lead after the first period buzzer. They built the lead up to as much as nine points and held a comfortable lead for most of the second quarter. But then quick as you can blink Lincoln shot their way back into the game.

After a lay-up by sophomore guard Patrick Brown put Jefferson up 31-23 and three straight blocks by Kareem Johnakin, Lincoln guard Ian Vasquez dribbled to the three point line and shot a big rainbow three early in the shot clock. Initially it looked like a bad shot, but it turned out to be a good one as soon as it went through the net. Telfair followed that up with a three from the left elbow and just like that it was 31-29 going into the locker rooms.

After electrifying junior guard Jaquan Lynch hit a three to open up the second half, Lincoln finally started to put it together offensively. The Railsplitters went on a 14-3 run including 5 straight points from transfer forward Travis Charles. Charles picked up his game in the second half after a quiet first one. Charles said his coach Dwayne "Tiny" Morton inspired him to play better in the second half. He was asked what Morton told him.

"You're not playing like the Travis Charles I know, and some other words I can't say", which drew a laugh from the circle of reporters surrounding Charles after the game. Charles was dominant in the second half, scoring off a beautiful jump hook from the right block that Jefferson couldn't deal with. He finished with 15 points and 8 rebounds.

Jefferson finally started to make some baskets and took the lead early in the fourth quarter when Lynch was fouled shooting a three and made all of the ensuing free throws to give Jefferson a 56-54 lead. Telfair answered that by driving all the way to the basket and finishing a lay-up with his left hand. After a lay-up by Jefferson guard Michael Watson Jr., Telfair hit a three from the top of the key to put Lincoln up by a point. The game was close the rest of the way, but Lincoln never gave up the lead again.

Telfair played well and said his teammate Isaiah Whitehead told him to take over after the first period when Lincoln was trailing. Whitehead could only offer advice because he was on the bench, unable to play because he was listed as inactive on the PSAL website. If he played the game could be forfeited, so all he could do was just cheer his team on.

Telfair took the advice well, going on and helping lead his team to victory on a tough Jefferson home court. One reason he played well is his coach has confidence him.

"I can make a mistake and know I'm going to stay on the court. I can make it up and make more plays" Telfair said.

Shaquille Davis had 13 points, while Tafari Whittingham had 10 points, 12 boards, and 7 blocks. Lynch led all scorers with 24 for Jefferson.
