Around the Mid-Atlantic: Big week for Hokies
Rivals.com Mid-Atlantic analyst Mike Farrell goes around his region.
Here are a few players who are starting to blow up on the scene as we approach the May Evaluation Period.
1. LB Alex Anzalone: The Pennsylvania linebacker has received offers from Florida, Ohio State, Michigan State, Alabama and Penn State, among others, recently. The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder has gone from three offers in early February to double digits and counting a few weeks later. He took recent visits to Ohio State and Penn State, and plans to get down to Florida and Alabama this spring. Right now the teams to beat appear to be the Buckeyes, Crimson Tide, Nittany Lions, Gators and Notre Dame. Offers from Michigan and Stanford could shake up that list a bit.
2. LB Yannick Ngakoue: The D.C. 'backer is starting to blow up with recent offers from Florida State and Michigan to go along with earlier offers from Maryland, Rutgers, Connecticut, Tennessee and West Virginia. Look for the 6-foot-2, 226-pounder to be a 30-plus offer prospect by the time the summer ends. Florida State, West Virginia and Tennessee are early leaders but Michigan will now be in the mix.
3. CB Devin Butler: Butler is now in double digits when it comes to offers and they are coming from all over the place. He has some you'd expect such as Boston College, UConn, Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina but also has Baylor, Houston, Wisconsin and Iowa. Oddly enough, Maryland has yet to offer but might be forced to do so soon as he continues to blow up. Wisconsin, Nebraska, Virginia and North Carolina appear to be his leaders right now with Northwestern also in the mix. The 6-foot-1, 170-pounder has excellent size and length to play corner in college.
CB Eli Woodard to Ohio State: This one wasn't a surprise at all, we were just all waiting to see when it would happen. The 6-foot-1, 185-pounder took a visit to Ohio State, finally got to meet Urban Meyer in person, and pulled the trigger then. Joining five-star Cameron Burrows as a 1-2 punch at corner for the Buckeyes is an impressive combination this early for Ohio State.
Virginia Tech: The Hokies are the only team that qualifies this week after landing LB/S Holland Fisher as well as ATH Cequan Jefferson from Richmond. Fisher is a Rivals250 prospect and one of the top players in a very deep year in the state. The battles between Virginia Tech and Virginia will be something to watch this year.
Keep an eye on
ATH Delando Johnson: The Calvert Hall standout doesn't have a position right now as he does most of his work close to the line of scrimmage in high school but projects as a safety, linebacker or wide receiver in college. He has offers from East Carolina, Toledo and Youngstown State but he's a BCS-caliber talent and the offers will come.
News & notes
Sources tell me that the leader for Olney (Md.) Good Counsel linebacker Dorian O'Daniel is Michigan followed by Florida and Clemson but with the Gators taking so many linebackers early, it could open things up for North Carolina or Auburn. His teammate, five-star Kendall Fuller, obviously favors Virginia Tech with all his family connections there but Alabama and Clemson are two to watch here. The two will take a visit together to Clemson the weekend of March 3-4.
Washington (D.C.) Friendship Collegiate Academy offensive lineman Derwin Gray just received offers from Florida State and Florida. The Seminoles are trying to lock down the school after winning the battle for Eddie Goldman last year and now offering Ngakoue and Gray.
