Kinlaw commits to ND

Story With Sidebar

Rashad Kinlaw left Notre Dame on Sunday knowing that he'd be back.

When the 6-foot-2, 185-pound athlete extended his stay to Sunday before driving home to Galloway, N.J., that afternoon he confided in his high school coach Dennis Scuderi that he already knew where he'd play college football. Kinlaw just wanted another day to think about it.

By Monday afternoon Kinlaw figured he'd thought enough, committing to Notre Dame over offers from Rutgers, Iowa, Boston College, North Carolina State and Temple. Kinlaw projects at cornerback for Notre Dame, the biggest need in this Irish class.

"It's a done deal," Scuderi said. "They're stealing him. This kid should have 80 offers right now. It's mind boggling."

Kinlaw doesn't in part because he broke his leg in the fifth game of last season while playing quarterback. He played only offense at Absegami High School, although he'll work his way into the defensive backfield this season after recently being cleared in full to return to competition.

Kinlaw got his first look at Notre Dame over the weekend during a trip with his mother and grandmother.

"It went real good," Kinlaw said on Sunday. "It's an excellent academic school. They've got an awesome graduation rate. The tradition there is really good. I talked mostly to all the staff and mostly coach Diaco, my recruiting coach. I don't want to say he was just like me, but it's easy to connect and talk to him."

Kinlaw said Notre Dame wants three cornerbacks this cycle with the incoming freshman class void at the position. As for the talent already on campus, Kinlaw said he talked with Bennett Jackson and watched the position during practice. The workout had a familiar feel to it.

"It kind of reminded me of my practices at home," Kinlaw said. "It was just fast-paced with the tempo they were going at. I liked how the coaches interact with the players."

Before exiting campus, Kinlaw picked up some Notre Dame gear, buying shorts, shirts and sweatpants in advance of his drive back to New Jersey.

"I'll probably most likely check it out again," he said.

There's no question about that now.
