Class of 2013 recruiting update: Defense

BroncoBlitz recently took a look at the situation recruiting the offensive side of the ball, and today it's time to go over Western Michigan's top targets on defense. The Broncos are well known for picking up solid talent in the secondary in particular, but will be looking for a fairly even mix of players across the defense this cycle.

On the defensive line, Western Michigan needs at least two or three players this cycle to stay stocked. Along with the numerous offensive linemen the Broncos are looking to sign, this makes the trenches a very important class of 2013 focus.

At defensive end, Chicago product Khairi Bailey is probably the top realistic target for WMU. Bailey has no BCS offers yet, though he has indicated that Illinois is his leader if offered. John Stepec was another top target for WMU at the position, but has received a number of major offers of late and recently left WMU out of his top three. Indianapolis' Anthony Winbush, however, has a good chance of coming to WMU and is receiving considerable attention from their coaches.

Beverly Hills (Mich.) Country Day defensive tackle Poet Thomas picked up early offers from Florida and Colorado, but is believed to want to stay close to home. The Big Ten has yet to offer, and it would be a real coup for Western Michigan, or any MAC school, to land Thomas.

WMU does not have a lot of offers out at linebacker, but Reggie Spearman recently reopened his recruitment after originally committing to Indiana. Spearman is very interested in attending Notre Dame, but may have interest in WMU if no further major offers are extended. Ryan Seibert of Powell, Ohio is also a priority for WMU, and currently holds an offer from Akron along with the Broncos.

The secondary is where WMU has had great success recruiting on defense in the past, and while they haven't extended a whole lot of offers there just yet, there are some quality prospects with Western Michigan interest. Safety Joshua Jones is off the board after recently committing to Toledo, but WMU has been active in Florida offering at least three cornerbacks in recent weeks. Detroit Cass Tech corner DeJuan Rogers is also drawing a hard look, and may be on the verge of BCS offers, but WMU is certainly in the mix as things stand now.
