Texas back heads west

Nimitz (Houston, Texas) running back Dre'Vian Young made his college decision on Monday electing to take his game to the Pac-12. The 5-foot-10 inch, 170 pound speedster committed to play for Utah, and join an offense in need of added speed.

Academics were a big factor in Young's decision to commit to Utah. "They have my major. I want to be a cartoonist, and they have the program. I also have an opportunity to maybe play early," Young said.

Young also has a close relationship with Utah safeties coach Morgan Scalley, who has worked hard in his recruitment. "Coach Scalley is cool. Since day one, he's been so nice to me. He just made me feel comfortable. I have no problem with him. He's a cool coach," he said.

As one of the fastest backs in Texas, Young will bring an added dimension to Utah's offensive attack. "I think I'm going to fit in pretty well to the offense. I think I can add some speed to it and they can do some things with me," he said.

Young is a two sport star for Nimitz, and is one of the best track athletes in Texas. He finished second in state in the 400 m last year, and also ran as part of the 4x100 relay. "The main thing track helps me with is speed. If it wasn't for track, I wouldn't be as fast. Just knowing the techniques of running. Without it, I wouldn't be on the field. It's opened doors from me. I don't have to run 40s because everyone can see me run on the track and know I'm fast," he said.

Young chose Utah over offers from Kansas State and Louisiana Lafayette. He was also receiving interest from a number of Pac-12 programs. He plans on taking shi official visit to Salt Lake City on November 30.
