Okonkwo is a Beaver
Well, this wasn't much of a process.
Cornerback Charles Okonkwo, a (former) San Diego State commit, picked up an offer from Oregon State the night before signing day. From there, things were simple. He listened, maybe shrugged his shoulders and accepted on the spot. That was that.
No signing day hat ceremony and no time to ponder his choice. Just a quick "thanks: and a "see you next season."
"Oregon State has been my dream school for as long as I can remember," Okonkwo said on Tuesday. "I like them. I like the rich tradition. I like that they're the underdog. I like everything about that school. I like being the underdog because I like proving people wrong.
Okonkwo's offer from the Beavers came on Tuesday night, but Oregon State has been in contact for some time. In the month leading up to signing day, the conversation grew more and more serious.
And then, bang. The deal was done with haste. Okonkwo hasn't even visited the campus.
"I'm supposed to get up there for a trip after signing day sometime," he said. "Just to get out there and see everything."
The conversation that sealed the deal was short. Okonkwo placed the call on Tuesday night and made things official - well, as official as they can be until he takes pen to paper on Wednesday.
"I told Coach [Mike] Riley and all the coaches," Okonkwo said. "They were all really excited."
Okonkwo, a three-star cornerback, claims 10 scholarship offers in total. He chose Oregon State over San Diego State, Utah State, Boise State and others.
As a senior, he helped lead Fontana, (Calif.) Summit to a 9-2 overall record.
