Mayo showed his brilliance as a scorer, with 20 of his 29 points in the first half, but it was the rest of the Trojans keying a second-half surge as USC routed Washington 73-59 on Thursday night.
The Trojans won for the sixth time in their last seven games, thanks to the likes of Dwight Lewis, Davon Jefferson and Angelo Johnson, who were largely responsible for USC's stunning 19-0 run early in the second half that sent Washington fans toward the exits with 11 minutes left.
Jefferson finished with 17 points and Lewis added nine as the Trojans (15-7, 6-4 Pac-10) got coach Tim Floyd his 300th collegiate victory in a career that has included stops at Idaho, New Orleans and Iowa State.
Jon Brockman, noticeable slowed by a nagging groin injury, led Washington (12-11, 3-7) with 13 points and 14 rebounds, but the Huskies lost their fourth in a row overall and for the third straight time on their once-formidable homecourt. Four of Washington's seven Pac-10 losses have come at home this season. It's Washington first three-game losing streak at home since Lorenzo Romar's first season at his alma mater in 2002-03.
There were opportunities in the first half for USC to turn the contest into a rout, but it finally did so early in the second half and mostly without any scoring from Mayo.
Ryan Appleby's 3-pointer with 18:06 left pulled Washington even at 38-all, the first tie of the contest. Lewis then answered with a 3 and scored the next eight points for USC, starting the Trojans' decisive run. Washington went scoreless for more than 7 minutes, while Jefferson, Johnson and Taj Gibson chipped in with points, before Mayo capped the run with a deep 3-pointer form the wing to give USC a 57-38 lead with 10:58 left.
Mayo, USC's star freshman, likely making his only college trip to Seattle, made 11 of 22 shots and topped the 20-point mark for the 11th time this season. He capped his night with 3 minutes left, whipping the ball behind his back in traffic to finish off a fastbreak layup.
USC beat Washington in similar fashion last month, pulling away in the second half for a 66-51 win in Los Angeles.
Washington started off in a zone defense and Mayo took full advantage of the gaps in the zone. Mayo eventually forced the Huskies out of their zone with a pair of 3-pointers midway through the first half.
Mayo scored 10 straight at one point for the Trojans, capping his run with a steal and breakaway dunk to give USC a 22-14 lead. The advantage reached 14 on Jefferson's basket with 4:50 left in the half.
The Huskies stayed close thanks to a 17-6 run to close the half. Justin Dentmon's forced one-hander as the buzzer sounded pulled Washington within 36-33 at the break.
