No wait for Nellum

Long Beach Poly (Calif.) wide receiver Bryshon Nellum, widely considered the nation's top track recruit, was reportedly expected to sign a letter of intent with USC Wednesday.
While Nellum has yet to confirm a commitment, his status as a two-sport star becomes clearer.

Signing a letter of intent for track, Nellum can still earn a football scholarship this fall in order to immediately suit up for the Trojans on Saturdays.
The NCAA rulebook states that athletes on non-football scholarships must wait two years before being eligible to participate in an intercollegiate football event.
However, this does not prohibit Nellum from trying out for a football scholarship at anytime in his collgiate career.
Sources at Poly reveal that Nellum will likely sign a letter of intent with USC for track, but join the football team this fall in an attempt to win a scholarship on the gridiron.
In that case, Nellum's letter of intent would not bind him to running track exclusively, nor would it delay his eligiblity in football.
Nellum, 6-foot, 175-pounds visited USC last weekend after taking earlier visits to LSU, Cal and UCLA. All the visits were for track, but according to Jackrabbit receivers coach Reggie Ward, Nellum also took a keen interest in playing football for the Trojans next fall.
"When he was on the visit, Bryshon talked to Pete Carroll and Ron Allice, the track coach there and they both gave him the OK," Ward told Rivals.com.
"I think he has a lot of upside as a receiver and is starting to make plays for us. He returned two punts for touchdowns last week and will be a factor for us in the playoffs."
As a junior, Nellum was the state champion in the 200, and 400-meters. He was also a member of the US gold medal winning 4X400m relay at the Junior World Championships in China last August.
