OLB Elijah Newby becomes USC's latest 2024 commitment

USC's first major official visit weekend of June has yielded some big results for head coach Lincoln Riley and the Trojans staff.

Over the last week USC's 2024 class has tripled in size with six prospects announcing commitments coming off their visits.

Cheshire (Conn.) Cheshire Academy standout outside linebacker Elijah Newby announced his USC decision on Friday, giving Riley's program nine commits overall in the class.

The 6-foot-4 prospect was wowed on his official visit to USC, putting the program in strong position as it battled with Penn State and South Carolina down the stretch.

"During my visit to USC, I was struck by how authentic both the staff and players were," he told TrojanSports.com this week. "My staff host, Brittany Thackery, was amazing and made us feel at home with her loving personality. Anthony Lucas, my player host, was also a pleasure to be around. Despite being new to the team, he shared as much knowledge as he could and there was never a dull moment when I hung out with him and a few other players.

"Coaches [Lincoln] Riley and [Roy] Manning were both great as well, with personalities that were easy to like. Overall, USC is an amazing place full of authentic people and provides many opportunities both on and off the football field."

Newby could have played at a number of programs as he has amassed a list of over two dozen offers already. Now, he'll move across the country to play for USC.

He is the fourth defensive commit in the class, joining four-star Rivals250 defensive back Dakoda Fields (Gardena Serra HS), Rivals250 safety Jarvis Boatwright (Clearwater, Florida) and defensive end Kameryn Fountain (Atlanta, Georgia) -- all part of last weekend's contingent of visitors.

Newby is the third East Coast commit of the week, joining Boatwright and Fountain.

The new additions have rocketed USC up the Rivals team recruiting rankings for 2024, and the Trojans now sit at No. 21 overall after the latest run on commitments.
