Reggie Bush through their eyes

Sports writers may have devoted more time trying to describe USC's latest Heisman winner and his amazing plays than finding "watering holes" in out-of-the-way college towns or mismatching outfits. Even in the information age where spellcheck is automatic and an encyclopedia of statistics is just a click away, the star running back has inspired them to dig through their thesauruses and expand their imaginations at nearly every venue the Trojans have played in the past two years.
Even opposing coaches and players have lavished the star with original and tremendous compliments.
So instead of pointing out Bush's impressive stats, other than the 8.8 yards per carry (which is just too ridiculous not to mention or repeat), or telling you all about his tremendous junior season, which is the reason we are naming him Rivals.com's 2005 Offensive Player of the Year, we let them do all the talking.
Here are a selection of some of the best descriptions of Bush we've seen, heard and read:
Bill Plaschke, Los Angeles Times: "Against Fresno State, swirling around the Coliseum field as if propelled by a leaf blower, Bush created one of the best performances in college football history while under some of the greatest pressure in college football history. … Bush was there for USC when the passing game didn't work against Arizona State. Bush was there when almost nothing worked against Notre Dame. And Bush was everywhere in a victory over Fresno State that required every last yard."
Pat Haden, NBC-TV: "I think of Reggie Bush as the First Amendment with hips. He's like trying to tackle a balloon in the wind. You never know where he's going to end up. He's got the moves of a belly dancer. It's like Dante's Nine Stages of Hell trying to tackle this guy."
Ian O'Connor, USA Today: "Nobody hits the hole faster. Nobody cuts against the grain on such ridiculously sharp angles. Bush is the ultimate video-game superhero, his thumb forever locked on the thrust button."
Bud Withers, Seattle Times: "He's a Ferrari on a two-lane mountain road. … He makes plays that steal your breath away, hip-snapping, field-reversing runs that make defenders into little boys, trying to capture autumn leaves spiraling down from trees. … For what it's worth, I've watched Pac-10 football for three decades-plus, but I haven't seen anything to top Bush."
Arizona State head coach Dirk Koetter: "I think he's off the charts. He could probably start at five different positions. … This year, he looks like he has two capes instead of one."
Steve Bisheff, Orange County Register: "Bush with the football in an open space is like Barry Bonds at the plate with the bases loaded. Immediately, your senses heighten. Your pulse races. Your eyes refuse to look anywhere else. … The Trojans' flashy hummingbird of an all-purpose player is an amalgam of all the great USC backs through the years."
David Leon Moore, USA Today: "Bush is basically a sworn enemy of a straight line. He's all switchbacks and zigzags, spin moves and ankle-breaking shimmies. … He runs with a can't-take-your-eyes-off-him style that seems part Marshall Faulk, part Barry Sanders, part Gale Sayers."
Tony Barnhart, Atlanta Journal-Constitution: "Reggie Bush is like Herschel Walker. He's a generational player."
Kirk Herbstreit, ESPN: "It's unfair to compare anybody to Reggie Bush. He's at a different level. I'm not talking about him just this year, but maybe ever. EA Sports video games is going to have to come up with a new button for Reggie Bush, because he's become ridiculous."
Washington State head coach Bill Doba: "If you've got a linebacker covering him, you might as well start singing their fight song."
Jeff Miller, Orange County Register: "What defenders see are hips and elbows and ankles and forearms and shoe bottoms, all of it twisting and spinning until what remains is a trail of vapor and shadows and empty-armed opponents."
Former USC All-American defensive lineman Shaun Cody: "Practicing against him was great training for us. You want to improve your quickness, try chasing a rabbit around."
Former USC All-American linebacker Lofa Tatupu: "We just sat back on Saturday and watched the show. … Not to take credit away from the offensive line because they've done a great job, but Reggie sets up his blocks so well that they can miss their man completely and he still gets through. … I've even told guys on the other team, 'Don't feel bad. He got me with that play twice this week in practice."
