Trojans land big man for 2014

Jordan Poland could never really be considered under the radar.
While just a junior to-be, the 6-foot-8, 335-pound La Jolla (Calif.) offensive tackle committed to USC when he was offered a scholarship by Lane Kiffin after the Trojans Lineman Camp Saturday. Already holding scholarship offers from UCLA, Oregon State, Boise State, Arizona State and Arizona, Poland was on the map early.

But Saturday, he decided to remove himself from the recruiting process just as early by committing to USC.
"They offered me after the camp today, which was really exciting," said Poland. "I feel like academically and athletically, USC fits me really well.
"I had a great time working with the coaches and everything just felt right. Coach [Kennedy] Polamalu came to see me last month, so I knew that USC was looking at me, but I didn't really expect an offer. It was a surprise - a good surprise.
"USC is the school I've always wanted to go to and grew up watching. When I met with the coaches, it was an honor knowing they wanted me at their school."
Poland is the first commitment in the 2014 class for USC, with the Trojans already holding the pledge of Elkton (Md.) 2015 quarterback David Sills.
Poland is originally from Phoenix (Ariz.) where he played at Williams Field High School. When he transferred to Country Day High School in La Jolla, Poland decided to enroll academically as a sophomore.
Athletically, Poland will have one more season left of eligibility to play football, and then sit out the 2013 season before enrolling at USC in January of 2014.
Poland also plays basketball, where his athletic ability causes onlookers to double take at first glance.
"He's one of those freaks of nature who will get offered by everyone in the country," said Steve Campbell, his former coach at Williams Field. "Everyone I've sent his tape to has been in awe. He can dunk a basketball at 330-pounds."
