Impact Analysis: Rasheem Green

USC will exit Signing Day with one of the best classes in the country, and possibly more five-star recruits than three-stars. So it says a lot that, amidst that mother lode of talent, arguably no player is a bigger get from an overall need and talent standpoint than Gardena Serra defensive end Rasheem Green.
Green, Rivals' fourth-ranked strongside defensive end and 33rd overall prospect, is a massive coup at a position that will profile as USC's biggest question mark heading into the 2016 season. At 6-foot-4, 290 pounds, Green will walk into college with NFL size that makes him physically ready to play from the onset of his USC career. With Leonard Williams expected to be a top-five pick in this year's NFL Draft, comparisons are bound to be made between Green and the departed Big Cat, but the Serra product is a different kind of player, one who leans on an explosive first step at this stage of his career more than polished technique. In what profiles as a deep defensive line class for the Trojans, he is unquestionably the crown jewel, one who has plenty of development left in his future but also refined enough to contribute early in his career.
Whether or not he does that as a true freshman could come down to his recovery from a knee injury that sidelined him for Serra's playoff run. His recovery timetable is unknown but, at this juncture, we're under no impression that his recovery will jeopardize his availability for fall camp. That being said, the real impact of Green's commitment figures to come in 2016. That's when five of USC's six returning defensive linemen will graduate, including the entire presumptive starting lineup of Antwaun Woods, Delvon Simmons and Claude Pelon. Playing time will be amply available, in other words, with Green, Noah Jefferson and the returning Kenny Bigelow (assuming he's not playing nose tackle) the early frontrunners to gobble up those snaps. In an ideal world, Green is healthy and ready enough to get into the rotation as a freshman, where he could prove to be the Trojans' most explosive end after Pelon.
But at a minimum, he'll have a year to marinate on campus and get ready for a big role in 2016. With USC having signed just defensive linemen total in the previous two classes, one of Steve Sarkisian's biggest coups in this cycle was the restoring depth with as many as five new signings on the line. Make no mistake, though: Green is the biggest get of them all, both on the defensive line and, perhaps, the entire 2015 signing class.
